Nokia to Start Mid-Range Lumia Smartphone Sales in Walmart

Nokia is expected to get a boost to its smartphone sales later this month when it starts selling its mid-range Windows Phone based device, the Lumia 521 in the USA's largest retailer, Walmart.

The handset is expected to go on sale for under US$150, with a T-Mobile tariff, making it a very competitively priced option in the smartphone market.

"There is an opportunity for us to offer a very high quality device in the mainstream," Terry Myerson, head of Microsoft's Windows Phone unit told the Reuters news agency. "That's where we've made progress in the last couple of months and it's a strategy we'll continue to explore in the United States."

The LTE enabled Lumia 521 -- which is the US variant of the Lumia 520 -- went on sale on the Home Shopping Network (HSN) last week, where it has already sold out.

The phone is being pitched as a mid-range model, with the latest Windows Phone OS, and a 4-inch screen and 5-megapixel camera.

The company has struggled to break into the market with the major mobile networks, who subsidise the top-end handsets from Samsung and Apple. The company is hoping that the deal with T-Mobile for an unsubsidized handset, but lower monthly tariff will help it break that logjam.

Ufone Starts Accepting Pre-Orders for Samsung Galaxy S4

Ufone today started accepting pre-orders for Samsung Galaxy S4 in Pakistan.

Ufone had announced earlier this week to co-launch Samsung Galaxy S4 in Pakistan, after which it is now accepting pre-orders for Samsung’s next flagship device.

Ufone customers can pre-order Galaxy S4 on Ufone’s website here or at selected customer service centres.

It is anticipated that Samsung Galaxy S4 will be available in Pakistan from May 5th, 2013 as Ufone has said that it will call customers after May 5th, 2013 regarding the availability of the phone.

Samsung Galaxy S4 Price:

Why and How Firefox OS is Better than Android and iOS?

Before explaining anything about Firefox OS, I want to discuss few limitations of Android and iOS platforms.

What Happened to Android and iOS?

You maybe wondering why a new mobile OS? Isn’t Android and iOS enough to meet our needs? The reality is there’s always room for improvement and innovation even in saturated markets like mobile operating system. There are many problems that are needed to be fixed in both operating systems. Following are few of the problems:

• Both Android and iOS are resource hungry. To have best experience with them, you need high end phone.
• High end phones are not affordable by everyone. So you can say they are designed for rich people.
• Resource hungry also means consuming more battery. They don’t have good battery life.
• Your phone is not upgradable to every new release of Android or iOS. Just because with every new release, you need a higher specs device to run it smoothly. So after few releases you are out of scene!
• Left behind on older versions means you can’t run new version of apps because they require you to upgrade to particular version of the OS.
• You are forced to download apps only from their marketplaces. Only Apple and Google are making money from this. What about network operators? What if someone like us want to build their own marketplace?

What’s Firefox OS

Firefox OS is 100% open source HTML5 based mobile OS developed by Mozilla Foundation (non-profit organization). The idea behind it is to make web as the native platform for mobile. Every app in it is developed using HTML5 including the Home Screen, Phone Dialer, SMS, Contacts, everything you see on the screen is developed using HTML5.

In Firefox OS, only browser engine runs above the kernel and device drivers and all apps are executed by that browser engine. Think this way. You have an OS which runs only a browser engine and that browser engine runs all the apps.

Problems that Firefox OS Solves?

Because of this architectural design, Firefox OS consume very less resources. Consuming less resources means many things.

1. It can run smoothly on low-end devices.
2. Of course low and mid range phones are less expensive than the high-end phones. So you can say Firefox OS hardware will be much cheaper than Android and iOS. Everyone can afford it easily.
3. Firefox OS devices will have much longer battery life because of less resource consumption.

Few other problems that Firefox OS solves.

1. Your phone never gets obsolete because web is the native platform. New version of apps will run easily even on your older hardware
2. You are not forced to download apps from Mozilla’s market place. You can add any web app on the internet as native app if the developer has added a small manifest file in the root dir of that app. You can even create your own market place.
3. Imagine a word in your mind and try searching it in App Discovery interface of Firefox OS, it will give you high quality chosen apps from all over the internet. This truly unlocks the power of web on mobile.

Firefox Apps:

Many of you will argue that Android and iOS are superior because of the ecosystem and the magnitude and quality of apps they offer. Well, I do agree that Firefox isn’t anywhere in the radar yet. But look at the openness of the platform and the potential apps for Firefox platform. It may take some time but ultimately Firefox will be placed best to beat the competition.

Not to forget Linux, which always struggled with Windows in terms of applications – but it is still one of the top competitors of Microsoft’s Windows.

Can I Buy Firefox OS Phone?

Firefox OS will see the light of the day in summer this year and Mozilla’s initial target is to launch the OS for low-end devices in developing countries, specifically the Latin America and few European countries. The only devices that are available now are Keon and Peak. Both of these devices are developer preview phones and manufactured by Spanish startup Geeksphone and the good news is that they are shipping them worldwide.

Keon is priced at 91 Euro (12,000 PKR) and Peak at 149 Euro (20,000 PKR). Just to mention that entire stock of these devices was sold out in just few hours after the launch. But Geeksphone promised to bring them back as soon as possible on thereonline store.

Other brands who will manufacture Firefox phones are Alcatel, Huawei, LG, Sony, and ZTE. Few months ago, Sony released Firefox OS experimental ROM for Xperia E. Alcatel and ZTE are targeting extremely low-end phones. You can check the demo of Firefox OS running on ZTE Open. ZTE Open has 256MB of RAM and 1GHz single core processor but still you can see from the demo how smooth it’s running on such low spec phone.

You maybe wondering why Samsung is not manufacturing Firefox OS phones. Actually they are developing their own OS called Tizen. Maybe at the end of this year or next year, you will see Tizen devices in market from Samsung too.

Why Support Mozilla?

Mozilla is non-profit and I fully support their philosophy of Open Web. About 50% of their source code is written by volunteers. Not only there products are open but also every single web page of there products is open. They have always promoted open technologies and never did anything bad to create monopoly.

Mozilla also won the Most Trusted Internet Company in Privacy award. Do you really believe in Google, Apple, Facebook or Microsoft in same way? I don’t!

Samsung Announces the New Galaxy Tab 3.0

Samsung has added a new tablet to its ever-growing line-up of Android devices, this time the Galaxy Tab 3 7.0. The tablet has a 7 inch display and runs on a dual-core processor. It follows the same design language (and the build materials) as the current Galaxy products.

The tablet is by all means meant to be a mid-range offering. Its 7 inch display is of WSVGA resolution i.e. 600 x 1024 pixels. And judging by the screen size, it’s a Nexus 7 competitor.

As expected, it follows the footsteps of the current Galaxy line-up of devices by featuring virtually the same design as nearly all of them. That too is not necessarily a bad thing but haters won’t find the Galaxy Tab 3 7.0 adorable either.

Under the hood, the tablet runs on a 1.2 GHz dual-core processor along with 1GB of RAM. There will be 8 or 16GB internal storage options, expandable via a microSD card slot.

On the software side of things, the tablet runs on Android 4.1, which is not exactly the latest but is not exactly a bad thing to have. And of course, all the famous Samsung apps come along with the tablet too.

Here are the full specifications of the Galaxy Tab 3 7.0.

Huawei Ascend G510: Review, Unboxing and Hands-on Video!

After announcing Ascend Y300 – a low end android smartphone — the Chinese company has recently introduced yet another budget android device Ascend G510 in the Pakistani market.

Ascend G510 was planned for a launch earlier this month, but due to the increase in taxes on mobile phones, company had to delay the launch for couple of weeks.

Just to mention, Huawei did a promotion on its official Facebook fan page, where customers pre-ordered Ascend G510 for a price of Rs. 14,700 and entered in a lucky draw to win 2 Dubai tickets. This promotion has now ended and orders are being shipped, though the winners of Dubai tickets are yet to be announced.

Now to a brief review of Ascend G510. I have tried to compare the phone with Y300throughout the post. So if you haven’t read the review of Ascend Y300 – you should better read it first.

Hardware Specifications:

• 4.5 inches IPS Capacitive Touch Screen
• Qualcomm MSM8x25 Snapdragon 1.2GHz dual core processor
• 512MB of RAM and Adreno 203 GPU
• 5 MP camera with auto-focus and 0.3 MP secondary camera
• 4 GB internal storage, up to 32 GB microSD card support

Design:

Ascend G510 follows the same generic smartphone design, found in nearly all devices launched by Huawei this year. In terms of design this phone is actually the bigger brother of Y300. It has slightly rounded corners just like Y300, and a total plastic body, but the rubbery feel is now replaced with gloss finish.

The phone dimensions are 134 x 67 x 9.9mm and it weighs around 150 grams. The textured cover makes it comfortable to hold but due to the glossy plastic it’s a little slippery.

Ascend G510 is equipped with a BIG 4.5 inch IPS touch screen, which is quite unusual for phone in this price range. The screen offers 854×480 pixel resolution with a pixel density of 218 ppi, still the images show quite vivid and sharp. Sadly the lack of Gorilla glass makes the screen vulnerable to scratches, So you will have to take extra care of the screen or even better if you use a screen protector.

Above the screen there is front facing camera, ear speaker, light sensors and notification LED. Below the screen we have three touch sensitive keys; back, home and menu.

The physical keys for power/lock and volume are quite oddly placed in Ascend G510,Instead of the regular top or right side positions the power key is placed on the left, just above the volume rocker and it takes a little while to get used to these new positions.

The microUSB port is also located on the left bottom. So on the right you have got nothing. On the top left we have 3.5mm headphone jack and on the bottom there is the microphone.

The back side of the phone is equipped with 5MP Camera, LED flash, speaker and embedded logos of Huawei and DTS. The back cover is actually not a usual cover but a complete shell. Under it we have slots for Mini SIM, Battery and microSD card.

The build quality of this phone is nice, but personally I prefer the rubberized feel of Y300, which provides a comfortable and strong grip. Moreover the placement of physical keys and the bigger size makes you a little uncomfortable at first, but after some time you get used to it.

Operting System and UI:

Just like its younger brother, Ascend G510  comes with Android Jelly Bean 4.1.1 out of box and on top of it runs Emotion UI, Huawei’s Proprietary User Interface. This UI provides an easy functionality for the new Android users. Personally I don’t like this interface as its not much customizable and feels bulky.

Mobilink to Offer Viber and Nimbuzz Bundles with Unlimited Usage

Mobilink has partnered with Viber and Nimbuzz to offer its prepaid customers unlimited – application specific – data bundles.

With these bundles, Mobilink customers will be able to make unlimited voice calls and send unlimited text messages using Viber and Nimbuzz.

Viber and Nimbuzz are mobile apps – available for all major platforms – that offer chat & IM service and voice calls for free.

These applications consume mobile internet for all the IM and voice traffic, which will be offered by Mobilink in bundles to its customers at a fixed daily price with unlimited usage.

According to information we have got, Nimbuzz bundle will be offered in next few days while Viber bundles for Mobilink customers will be available during last week of May 2013.

Prices of Mobilink bundles for Viber and Nimbuzz are not known yet.

VoIP services, such as Viber and Nimbuzz, that also offer chat and IM services are getting popular in Pakistan. Inflating trend of mobile internet usage in the country is likely to see further surge after such bundle offers by cellular operators.

It merits mentioning here that Twitter and Facebook bundles are already being offered by various operators. However chat and voice services such as WhatsApp bundle offered by Ufone and these upcoming Viber and Nimbuzz bundles from Mobilink are going to transform the way people communicate with each other.

These bundles are going to offer true value against the money that customers spend on their telecommunication tools.

PTCL Upgrades Broadband Student Package to 2Mbps for 2 Months

Pakistan Telecommunication Company Limited (PTCL) has announced that students can experience higher speeds of 2Mbps without any additional charges for next two months.

Earlier, student package users were getting 1Mbps internet broadband speed.

PTCL said that all 1Mbps student package holders are automatically upgraded to 2Mbps for free. This offer will be valid till 30 June 2013, while standard 2 Mbps tariff of Rs. 1,299 per month will be applicable from 1st July 2013.

Subscribers, who wish to opt out of this offer can call 1236 or email atstudent.broadband@ptcl.net.pk.

Here are offer highlights:

• 2 Mbps Speed for the Price of 1 Mbps
• Unlimited Downloads
• All Student 1 Mbps Customers have been upgraded to Student 2 Mbps
• No additional charges till 30th June 2013

Shahid Afridi to be dropped for Champions Trophy

Pakistan Cricket Board (PCB) selection committee has decided not to include all-rounder Shahid Afridi for the forthcoming Champions Trophy, starting from June 6 in England.

According to sources the committee took the decision to drop Afridi with the consent of team management.

The final team is expected to be announced today after the approval of board chairman Zaka Ashraf, however, due to team manager Intikhab Alam’s busyness in fast bowling camp in Karachi, the announcement could be delayed till tomorrow.

The insiders have said that probable likely to be comprised of Misbah-ul-Haq, Mohammad Hafeez, Nasir Jamshed, Imran Farhat, Haris Sohail, Asad Shafiq, Kamran Akmal, Mohammad Irfan, Asad Ali, Shoaib Malik, Saeed Ajmal, Abdul Rehman, Junaid Khan, Ehsan Adil and Aizaz Cheema.

people throw money. On the hands of a woman, asleep, is a two year old baby. He's in a dirty hat and dirty clothes.

“Madonna with baby” - numerous passers-by will donate money. The people of our kind- we always feel sorry for less fortunate. We are ready to give unfortunate people the last shirt, the last penny out of your pocket and never think another issue.
Helping, seems like. “Good job done”...

I walked past a beggar for a month. Did not give any money, as I knew that this is a gang operated scam and money collected by the beggar will be given to whoever controls beggars in the area. Those people own numerous luxury properties and cars.
Oh and beggar also gets something, of course “ A bottle of vodka in the evening and a döner kebab”.
A month later, walking past the beggars, as shock, it suddenly
hit me….
I'm staying at a busy crossing, stared at the baby, dressed as always- dirty track suit. I realized that it
seemed "wrong", finding a child in a dirty underground station from morning to evening.
The baby slept. Never sobbed or screamed, always asleep, burying his face in the knee of a woman who was his MUM.

Do any of you, dear readers, have children? Remember how often they
slept at the age of 1-2-3 years? Hour two, maximum three (not consecutive)
afternoon nap, and again – movement. For the whole month, every day of my
walking in the underground, I've never seen a child awake! I looked
at the tiny little man, with his face buried in the knee of his mother, then at the beggar, and my
suspicion was gradually formed.
– Why he sleeps all the time? I asked, staring at the baby.

The beggar pretended not to hear me. She lowered her eyes and
hid her face in the collar of her shabby jacket. I repeated the question. The woman again
looked up. She looked somewhere behind my back, tired with utter irritation. Her look was similar to the creatures from a different planet.
-F **k off ... her lips murmured.
-Why is he asleep?! I almost cried ...

Behind me someone put his hand on my shoulder. I looked back. A some old man was looking at me disapprovingly:

– What do you want from her? Can’t you see how hard she’s got it in her life… Eh …
He gets some coins from his pocket and throws them in the beggar’s bag.

Beggar made a hand wave of a cross, portraying the face of humility and universal
grief. The guy removed his hand from my shoulder and strolled out of the underground station.
I bet, at home, he will tell how he defended poor, distraught woman from a soulless man in a tube station.

Next day I called a friend. It was a funny man with eyes like olives Romanian nationality. He only managed to complete three and a half years of education. The complete lack of education does not prevent him from moving around the
City streets on very expensive foreign cars and live in a “small” house with countless number of windows and balconies. From my friend I managed to find out that this business, despite the apparent
spontaneity, clearly organized. Its supervised by begging organized crime rings. The children used are in "rent"
from families of alcoholics, or simply stolen.
I needed to get the answer to the question – why is the baby sleeping? And I received it. My friend Gypsy said the phrase, completely ordinary with calm voice that twisted me in shock, just like he was talking about weather report:
-They are on heroin, or vodka ...
I was dumbfounded. "Who is on heroin? Whom – under vodka?! "
He answered
-The Child, so he doesn’t scream. The women will be sitting whole day with him, imagine how he might get bored?

In order to make the baby slept the whole day, it pumped up with vodka or drugs. Of course, children's bodies are not able to cope with such a shock. And children often die. The most terrible thing – sometimes children die
during the "working day". And imaginary mother must hold another dead child on her hands until the evening. These are the rules. And the by passers-by will throw some money in the bag, and believe that they are moral. Helping
"mother alone" …

… The next day I was walking near the same underground station. I stocked up journalistic identity, and was ready for a serious conversation. But the conversation didn't work out. But turned out the following ...
A woman was sitting on the floor and in her hands she was holding a child. I asked her a question about the documents on the child, and, most importantly, where was yesterday's kid, which she simply ignored.
My questions were not ignored by passers-by. I was told that I was out of my mind screaming at poor beggar with a child. All in all, I was escorted out of the tube station in disgrace. One thing remained was to call the police. When police arrived, beggar with the baby disappeared. I stood with a full sense of - “I'm trying to fight windmills”.

When you see in the subway, on the street whether women with children,
begging, think before your hand climb for money. Think about that, if it wasn't for your hundreds of thousands of handouts, the business like this would have died. The business would die and not the children-inflated with vodka or
drugs. Do not look at the sleeping child with affection. See horror… Since you're reading this article, you know now- why the child is sleeping in beggars hands.

Hair stylist Nabila grooms budding Pakistan bowlers

KARACHI: The tough-guy fast bowlers of yesteryear might not approve, but Pakistan’s budding young quicks were coached on their appearance at a training camp this week – by a hair stylist.

The Pakistan Cricket Board (PCB) organised the 10-day camp led by legendary paceman Wasim Akram after concerns were raised over the standard of fast bowlers coming through from the youth ranks.

As well as being drilled in technique and fitness, the players were also given a lecture by top Pakistani stylist Nabila Ahmed on how to look good off the field.

“We wanted to tell the players through Nabila’s lecture how to present yourself as a person which is very important for international players as they are ambassadors of the country,” said Wasim, who indicated that his floppy centre parting may have helped him to snare his 414 Test wickets.

“A good hairstyle and good dress add to your confidence and it can play a very good role in giving someone much-needed confidence.”

Since retiring from cricket Wasim has become a familiar presence on Pakistani TV screens, both as a cricket pundit and in advertisements, and he is keen for his young charges to learn from his slick demeanour.

“As a person you need to look presentable, which I feel has been missing in some of our players,” he said.

The initiative is yet another important step towards the financial inclusion of rural and semi-urban Pakistanis who have no choice today but to save their funds in informal savings.

Khushaal Munafa offers Easypaisa mobile account customers a profit of up to 9 per cent on saving Rs 2,000 or more in their mobile accounts. “The profit offered by Khushaal Munafa is also unique in the sense that it is calculated on a daily basis and the profit is transferred in the mobile accounts at the end of each month,” said Roar Bjaerum, Chief Financial Services Officer at Telenor Pakistan.

He said that this product will focus on micro savings, reducing vulnerability of low income families to unexpected events and promote savings as a way to increase their opportunities to grow and improve quality of lives.

In his remarks, Nadeem Hussain, CEO and President, Tameer Micro Finance Bank, said:  “Khushaal Munafa will help create a financial ecosystem for the bottom of the pyramid and empower them with the basic rights to avail services that provide an affordable and convenient method of integration into the world of financial services.”

Currently, there are four different savings plans under Khushaal Munafa being offered to Mobile Account customers with minimum balance requirements ranging from Rs 2,000 to Rs 25,000.
