The Silk Way Encounters the Arab Spring

silk route
The initial wave of Arab Spring in Tunisia and Egypt, and the fatal consequences in few states such as Libya, sent a wave of fear along the Middle Eastern and Central Asian states. The fear, initially of people’s reaction, turned in to extremist elements taking over the helm of state affairs.

This lead to spontaneous bars on social media and freedom of  expression in many of these states. Not to forget Egypt, that had strict filters over usage of Internet and the social media in order to curb any possible movement against the Mubarak regime. Interesting to notice in many of these states were the common factors; Dictatorship, control over the state media and internet, high level of poverty and unemployment and no room for political activity from opposition parties.

The reason I include the central Asian region in my analysis is because the region makes the heart of Asia coupled with providing the main route to the New Silk Route, a future venture that may lead to a face-offs between Washington and Moscow. The formation of region’s states makes it interesting to monitor for a neutral observer.

Although the US national foreign policy would never keep the region on its top priority, implicit indications from the word go provided a fair picture of what the US was after. Former US National Security Advisor Zbigniew Brzezinski once referred to Central Asia, a hotbed of conflict and one of the most strategically important parts of the world, as the “Eurasian Balkans.”

One may get an easy impression that Central Asia is traditionally, a Russian operated and influenced region, but that is not the case. States like Uzbekistan make the situation complex where its President, Islam Karimov, even having a dark history on his back, is supported by the US administration, solely because of his sour ties with Moscow.

Tajikistan is also somewhat similar. The people mostly rely on Russia for their livelihoods and in turn make up a good chunk of their country’s GDP and foreign reserves from what they earn there. But on state level, recent events, such as the Pilot sentencing saga, where a Russian and Estonian Pilot were arrested and jailed on allegations of smuggling, depict that the policy makers want to get America’s soft corner for further aid and support.

Tackling this situation, Russia along with the help of China, has somewhat indicated and strived towards a New World Order by channelizing the foundation and functioning of the Shanghai Cooperation Organization (SCO). SCO, comprising of Russia , China, four Central Asian states excluding Turkmenistan, and observer members including India, Pakistan, Afghanistan, Iran, Turkmenistan and Mongolia, can develop into an influential regional watchdog on pattern of NATO.

With recent meetings and joint statements at the SCO, it is quite obvious that the body, unlike NATO, has a peaceful Asian region on its agenda. The recent SCO summit sent out a clear message that it wants a peaceful and stable Afghanistan soon after the evacuation of the coalition forces. Such an agenda may directly collide with that of NATO’s.

When NATO is seeking for further military bases and installations, SCO seeks peace and not War. SCO clearly stood against the Libyan intervention and is now opposed to such type of intrusion in Syria. The SCO, mainly Russia and China, have been vocal in all major sanction resolutions against Iran and Syria in the United Nations Security Council, something not going well with NATO. Finally, it would do its best to prevent any conflict in the larger Eurasian region in order to maintain peace and stability in the region.

The four Central Asian players involved with the SCO were also invited to the NATO Chicago summit. The message was simple. As three Central Asian states, Uzbekistan, Tajikistan and Turkmenistan, provide alternative supply routes to the NATO forces, they could well be beneficial members not only for this supply but also for long term agenda, including natural resources, military bases and regino-political manipulation.

Breaking these states off the SCO for NATO may take the region on a collision course in form of the New Great Game. With these states in wings of Russia and China, such a venture may sure reap no dividends as both these powers would not make any bargain on regional stability, which is in turn directly related to economic prosperity and development. This makes it clear that in this new round of the New Great Game, the “democracy seeking” West may encourage some Arab Spring winds to hit the Silk Road.

Is Nokia About To Launch Solar Chargers For Its Smartphones?

Nokia Phone
Is Nokia finally about to embrace solar charging for its smartphones? Nokia posted the above image to its Facebook page with the caption,
“sun, sun, sun, here we come!”
Now, that could be nothing more than an allusion to the handset’s yellow color, but it’s also got a lot of people talking about the company’s solar charging ambitions. After all, Nokia released plenty of yellow Lumias before, so there’s reason to suspect that Nokia might have more to promote here than just the phone’s hue alone.
For the moment, this is just more speculation, but Nokia’s flirtation with solar technologies could be long from over.

Chris Gayle, Good but Not Great

Chris Gayle
He hits it Hard! Wrong! He hits it very High and Hard, but seldom when the stakes are HIGH. Meet Christopher Henry Gayle, who his die-hards call “Chris ‘Mr Sixer’ Gayle” with love during the unavoidable temptation of Fast Food Cricket, i.e T-20’s.

Crowds simply love him; he is the perfect showman for this showpiece cricket, stadium filler, a craze, and in the end, a phenomena. People buy heavy-priced tickets to entertain themselves and the 6 foot 3 inch giant from Jamaica makes sure he leaves his fans stuffed and gasping for breath.

Thanks to festivals like IPL, Big Bash etc, the flamboyant Gayle finds himself as the brightest star of modern cricket. Talk to kids and youngsters of today and no one wants to learn the crafts of Inzamam, Tendulkar or Ponting, they would rather be curious to know if Gayle could match the height of the giants of “Jack the Giant Slayer”.

And that’s where his skyrocketing stature hits ground. In my modest opinion he could be best described as a juggler who would occasionally show his brilliant act here and there, but when it comes to big matches, Gayle fails to stand amongst the big guys.

No one would dare doubt his killing instincts. He would force even the best of bowlers to buy sleeping pills. But the flashy opener refused to put an ear when coaches tried to teach him skills beyond the early glitz. How to finish a match, how to be a true match winner?

Big players rise on big occasions, Inzamam captured the imagination of a nation in 92, Aravinda De Silva made Aussies bite dust in 96, Ponting tore India apart in 2003 and Dhoni pocketed victory on 2012. Even our ever adorable Afridi made history at the 2009 T-20 WC. Gayle sadly has nothing to boost but personal records.

I know, pointing fingers at Gayle, especially after his mammoth 175 is like putting your hands inside a honey bee comb. I can imagine how fans would be sharpening their daggers, but before to slit open my throat, take a moment to view his big match statistics.

2006 Champions Trophy final versus Australia, a hasty 27 ball 37 didn’t do the Caribbeans any good. 2012 T-20 WC finals against Sri-Lanka, a hopeless 3 of 16 deliveries. Forget the rest, he fell flat even in his favorite hunting ground, the final of IPL 2011 where he broke a million hearts and bought a duck.

Few players would be lucky enough to have played in three major finals yet left their fans pulverized. The only noteworthy performance in memory would be the semifinals of 2012 T-20 WC where he pushed back the Aussies with an injury prone 41 ball 75.

Chris is a man who lives his life on his terms and is never afraid to make his views heard. No surprise he highlighted his dislike for Test cricket on countless occasions. T-20 is his baby, and it’s not only him. Look around and you would find an endless list of ambitious cricketers craving for the shorter format, and why won’t they?  Twenty20 is where the money is, and increasingly, it’s where the players want to be. Aside from the Ashes, and perhaps India v Australia, the prestige of Test cricket is gradually ebbing away.

Following the footsteps of Afridi, Gayle has successfully made himself part of the 20 over folklore. At 33 and still going strong, Gayle would have strength to last till the 2015 WC, which would give him and the Caribbean’s at least 3 more shots at victory.

Would Gayle like to be remembered as an athlete who brought home shinning metals like countryman Usain Bolt, or a half-cooked prodigy who would drop the cup even before lifting it? Let him decide himself.

Mobile Phone Sales Drop Significantly After Imposition of New Tax

Mobile Phones Pakistan Mobile Phone Sales Drop Significantly After Imposition of New Tax
Sale of new mobile phones dropped by almost 30 percent after imposition of Rs. 500 tax on feature phones and Rs. 1,000 on smartphones, reported Dawn news citing Azad Lalani, Director Teletec, a mobile phone distributor in the country.
Mobile phone traders have protested against the decision and requested the President and Prime Minister of Pakistan to take back the decision, which has increased the prices of cell phones by Rs. 2,000 to 3,000 on average.
Azad Lalani, while speaking with Dawn.com, said that 80 to 85 percent mobile buyers go for low-end phones ranging from Rs. 2,000 to Rs. 3,000, however, with increased prices this major chunk of buyers are now reluctant to spend on mobile phones. “After the imposition of Rs500 tax, many people are unable to purchase the phones”, maintained Mr. Lalani.
United Mobile, on other hands, said that their sales plunged by more than 50 percent after the imposition of new tax on mobile phones. Manager Sales, Mr. Noman Zakriya, was quoted as saying that people belonging to low-income are unable to accept the new price hike and hence not making any purchases.
Business Community and mobile phone traders are fearing that this price hike will encourage illegal trade of mobile phones resulting in no revenues for the government and legitimate traders.

China Mobile Blocked from Taiwan Investment

China Mobile has cancelled plans to buy a minority stake in the Taiwan based mobile network, Far EasTone after the Taiwanese government refused to lift ownership restrictions.
China Mobile had been planning to pay US$600 million for a 12 percent stake in the Taiwan mobile network. The deal was originally announced all the way back in April 2009.
Investments by Chinese firms in Taiwan has been a contentious issue, particularly in industries sometimes seen as strategic to the nation, such as telecommunications.
The companies announced that the investment would be replaced by a framework for business cooperation instead, but may consider a financial investment again if the government lifts its restrictions.

VimpelCom Sells Cambodian Mobile Network to Local Businessman

Russia's VimpelCom has sold its entire indirect stake in Sotelco in Cambodia to its local partner, Mr. Huot Vanthan.
The company had already been known to be looking at selling off a number of its smaller subsidiaries in Asia and Africa as it refocuses its attention on its main markets.
Jo Lunder , Chief Executive Officer of VimpelCom, commented: "We have previously outlined our Value Agenda within which our operations are reviewed to assess their future value to the Group. The decision to sell our interest in Cambodia is a result of this process. We are happy that our long term partner in the company now takes control of the business in Cambodia."
The company did not say how much it sold the stake for.
According to our records, VimpelCom bought a 90% stake in a local holding company holding mobile operator licenses back in July 2008 for US$28 million, with the remaining 10% remaining with Mr. Huot Vanthan.
The network commercially launched in May 2009 after awarding a five-year infrastructure contract to Huawei.

1Q13 Samsung Takes 30% of Global Smartphone Market

According to DRAMeXchange, in the first quarter of 2013 smartphone shipments increased steadily worldwide, with total shipments reaching 216.4 million units, 9.4% QoQ growth. Since the beginning of 2012, smartphone shipment figures have been up every quarter despite seasonality, indication the electronic device is here to stay.

Samsung Takes 30% of Global Market, iPhone Losing Ground
Looking at first-tier manufacturers' shipment volumes, Samsung continues to take the lead in the first quarter as the maker uses its vertically integrated supply chain, global marketing, and various sales channels to its advantage. Samsung's smartphones series is expected to see 65M units shipped this quarter, which accounts for 30% of the global market.
As for Apple, the iPhone 5 has been unable to satisfy consumers' desire for innovation, and shipments were unsatisfactory as Android manufacturers have stepped up to the plate. The Cupertino company shipped a mere 37.5 million units in the first quarter, giving them 17.3% market share, a decrease of 1.2% from the previous quarter. Currently, circumstances surrounding the announcement of Apple's new device are unclear, while Samsung, HTC, Sony, and other global corporations are planning product unveilings for the second quarter, which will likely lead to another dip in Apple's shipments.
Samsung Takes All in China as Lenovo's Results Disappoint
Turning to China's smartphone market, Samsung is the leading brand in terms of both reputation and image, a fact reflected in the manufacturer's sales figures. Initial estimates place Samsung's smartphone shipments in China at 11.7 million units, giving the Korean maker a wide lead over other brands with approximately 17% of China's smartphone market.
Other leading brands in China like Huawei, ZTE, and Lenovo were all affected in varying degrees, but on average China's domestic brands saw a 5-15% decrease in sales in the first quarter. Lenovo, who had nearly caught up to Samsung in market share in the second half of 2012, experienced weaker sales than expected in the first quarter; at 7.6 million units, actual shipments were 15% less than projected.
As for the second quarter, although smartphone shipments will continue to grow, manufacturers are facing problems with component supply; for instance, the shortage of memory products like eMCP. Therefore, smartphone makers' relationships with their suppliers will determine how strong their shipment volumes will be in the second quarter. Those with the best supplier ties will have an advantage going into the next quarter, while other makers will be left dealing with shortages.

China Mobile Profit Growth Stalls Despite Higher Revenues

China Mobile has posted the smallest rise in quarterly profits in the past three quarters as higher costs ate into the gains from an increased subscriber base.
Net profit for the first quarter was almost flat at RMB 27.9 billion (US$4.5 billion), compared to RMB 27.8 billion a year ago. The company has been hurt by increased handset subsidy costs as more consumers upgrade to smartphones.
The company faced "unprecedentedly intense market competition and more apparent substitution of traditional communication business by new technologies and new businesses," China Mobile Chairman Xi Guohua said in a statement.
Revenues however rose by 5.7 percent to RMB 134.7 billion.
China Mobile added 26.4 million 3G users -- taking its total 3G customer base to 114.4 million subscribers. The company's total customer base exceeds 700 million.
The company also recently announced that it would increase its investment in LTE based networks by nearly 50% this year. Total capex is expected to exceed US$7 billion.

NASA Sends Three Android Smartphones into Space

Three smartphones destined to become low-cost satellites rode to space Sunday aboard the maiden flight of Orbital Science Corp.'s Antares rocket from NASA's Wallops Island Flight Facility in Virginia.
The trio of "PhoneSats" is operating in orbit, and may prove to be the lowest-cost satellites ever flown in space. The goal of NASA's PhoneSat mission is to determine whether a consumer-grade smartphone can be used as the main flight avionics of a capable, yet very inexpensive, satellite.
The hardware for this mission is the Google-HTC Nexus One smartphone running the Android operating system.
Transmissions from all three PhoneSats have been received at multiple ground stations on Earth, indicating they are operating normally. The PhoneSat team at the Ames Research Center in Moffett Field, Calif., will continue to monitor the satellites in the coming days.
The satellites are expected to remain in orbit for up to two weeks.
"It's always great to see a space technology mission make it to orbit -- the high frontier is the ultimate testing ground for new and innovative space technologies of the future," said Michael Gazarik, NASA's associate administrator for space technology in Washington. "Smartphones offer a wealth of potential capabilities for flying small, low-cost, powerful satellites for atmospheric or Earth science, communications, or other space-born applications. They also may open space to a whole new generation of commercial, academic and citizen-space users."
Satellites consisting mainly of the smartphones will send information about their health via radio back to Earth in an effort to demonstrate they can work as satellites in space. The spacecraft also will attempt to take pictures of Earth using their cameras. Amateur radio operators around the world can participate in the mission by monitoring transmissions and retrieving image data from the three satellites. Large images will be transmitted in small chunks and will be reconstructed through a distributed ground station network.
NASA's off-the-shelf PhoneSats already have many of the systems needed for a satellite, including fast processors, versatile operating systems, multiple miniature sensors, high-resolution cameras, GPS receivers and several radios.
NASA engineers kept the total cost of the components for the three prototype satellites in the PhoneSat project between $3,500 and $7,000 by using primarily commercial hardware and keeping the design and mission objectives to a minimum.
NASA added items a satellite needs that the smartphones do not have -- a larger, external lithium-ion battery bank and a more powerful radio for messages it sends from space. The smartphone's ability to send and receive calls and text messages has been disabled.
Each smartphone is housed in a standard cubesat structure, measuring about 4 inches square. The smartphone acts as the satellite's onboard computer. Its sensors are used for attitude determination
